Need some great golf? Lake Charles has more than a half-dozen beautiful golf courses, all set against the backdrop of the bayou, led by Contraband Bayou Golf Club and The Country Club at the Golden Nugget, host to the annual Korn Ferry Tour tournament. Lake Charles, Louisiana – only about 35 minutes from the Texas board, located right on the I10 freeway offers you all the amenities to craft the perfect golf trip. And you don’t even have to drive all the way out to Baton Rouge or New Orleans to get it – the beautiful city of Lake Charles has everything you could every want. And our neighbor to the East, Louisiana, has the golf, nightlife, restaurants and culture for the perfect golf trip, all within a couple hours’ drive. What often goes overlooked, however, are the places right in our own (figurative) backyard. In the end, more often than not all that planning and leg work is worth it, but it can be draining, and result in fewer golf trips than we all might prefer. And if you thought Golden Nugget was good value, you’ll be amazed to learn that a round at Contraband Bayou never costs more than $109: There aren’t many Fazio courses you can play on summer weekends for that. When searching for (or being asked about) great golf travel locations, the heavy hitters that often come up – the Pinehursts and Pebble Beaches and Kiawah Islands of the world – require a boat load of planning, an incredibly long lead time and, in most cases, at least one rather lengthy (and costly) plane ticket (or two if you are making the big trip over the pond).Ī golf trip can be an ordeal – you have to coordinate hotel rooms and tee times and course availability, not to mention finding extracurricular post-round activities, renting cars, dealing with weather and finding places to eat that don’t cost an arm and a leg. Now fully public, the course has reached its considerable potential following a 2010 renovation that finally cleared all the remaining tree stumps that Hurricane Rita left behind in 2005, upgraded the bunkers, and saw Champion Bermuda replace TifDwarf on the greens. Before CCGN, the reputation of the Lake Charles golf scene relied heavily on Tom Fazio’s Contraband Bayou, which was available only to guests of L’Auberge when the casino-resort opened in May 2005.Expect to pay $250–$300 for a course this good in other parts of the country, but just $159 gets you on-$129 if you’re staying at the Golden Nugget. Officially opened in May 2016, CCGN has a number of holes on the water that have a genuine Scottish look about them.
